Intravenous Laser Blood Irradiation Therapy (Intravenous Laser Therapy or ILBI) exposes the patient’s blood to low levels of laser radiation in order to stimulate changes in the interactions of molecules such as lipid-water, protein-water, lipid-protein in the blood. These changes then affect the activity of biochemical reactions in the body. Clinical results from the use of intravenous laser therapy include stimulation of metabolism, immune protection, increase in resistance to germs, dehydration and thrombolytic activity, analgesic effect, and anti-inflammatory activity.
Administration of ILBI was first reported 25 years ago and in the meantime, the procedure and the technology have advanced. In the procedure, laser light is delivered via an optical fibre intravenous catheter, which was passes through the lumen of a butterfly needle into a peripheral vein in the forearm or back of the hand. Treatments last from 15 – 30 minutes and are repeated daily for 7 -12 days.
Early use of ILBI used only red laser light, however, more recent work has included the use of yellow, green, blue, infrared and UV lasers with each one having additional benefits.
Red laser light has been shown to activate ATP-production in blood cells, leading to increased energy, better circulation, improvement of neuron functions and improvement of immune defence.
Intravenous laser irradiation of blood using yellow laser light is known to improve serotonin and vitamin-D metabolism. Serotonin is a hormone responsible for happiness therefore yellow laser is effective in the treatment of depression. Vitamin-D is also important for bones, connective tissue, immune defence and prevention of infection.
Green laser light used in ILBI has a strong anti-inflammatory effect. Thus, green laser is used therapeutically for the prevention of infection, against inflammatory swelling, and against ulcers or infectious tumors.
Blue lasers used in ILBI have a positive effect on the immune response and the ability of the body to heal wounds due to anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory effects.
ILBI using infrared light has been shown to increase energy and is used therapeutically in the treatment conditions where chronic fatigue is an issue. Infrared light stimulates ATP production, which when metabolized produces cellular energy.
Ultraviolet blood irradiation is used as a non-toxic, drug-free means of treating blood-borne viruses and offers hope to those who suffer from viral infections and related conditions. By exposing the blood to ultraviolet light, the body’s immune response can be modulated to fight infections and to reduce the effects of conditions such as psoriasis, lymph cancer, chronic infections, chronic fatigue, and other auto-immune diseases.
ILBI has been used positively in the case of several disorders and studies have shown promising results in patients with forms of arthritis, skin conditions, periodontal disease and more. The procedure has also been shown to have anti-aging effects, reducing the appearance of scars and eliminating wrinkles.
